I think the surge you normally see in console sales before a huge title releases is a sign of how the game will perform later on same with pre-orders.

PS3 has had so many SKU swaps and price drops so early its un-head of. The leader of two generations coming out of a generation of 120-150 millions PS owners(or consoles sold) must have Sony staff staying up at night.
No one was ever excited about KZ2(masses/consumers or even FPS fans) other than a handful of fanatical PS3 fanboys using the game as an tool against the 360.
